As I was telling you last week we went to Nichole’s house to celebrate the New Year. As we walk in I see familiar faces and meet some new people. There were throngs of people young and old eating, playing cards or watching the New Year’s festival on cable. Andrea is talking with Nichole while Syd and I eat pizza, wings, chips and chat with various folk.
As the kids and adults are playing Uno a baby starts crying really LOUD. We all hear the screams and a little girl says the baby “fell down the stairs” as she tries to help the baby to her mother. The mom looks at the baby and says, “I saw you. You ain’t fall down no stairs. You fell on the carpet beside the stairs. Stop crying” and just like that no more tears and the Mom went back to the game.
One of the party goers comes to me, introduces himself and starts talking about some college football game he is watching in another room but as you know Sean don’t know nuffin bout no football. All I hear is the Charlie Brown horns wah wah wah wah as he tells me who is doing what on the field. I nod my head in agreement as if I know what he is talking about (I don’t). I politely excuse myself by plopping a slice a pizza in my mouth and he goes back to watching the NAACP on ESPN.
Another guy comes up and comments that he likes my Nike sneakers. He tells me they are Airforce Marine Mammal Scotty Jordan’s, or something to that effect, that he hasn’t seen in a while and word for word says, “They are the SHIT” which means these are highly desirable shoes. Again, I nod my NON fashion knowing head in agreement. I don’t tell him that these “special” Nike’s that he is so enamored with came from Kohl’s and the only reason that I bought them is because they were on sale, in my size and they don’t look like the “old man” shoes that I normally buy that my wife and daughter laugh at.
So the countdown is about one minute away and Nichole mutes the sound on the TV to say a prayer to bring in 2017. As she is giving thanks to God for all of the wonderful blessings He has done for each of us I reflect on being thankful for Andrea, Syd, family and friends. I love my life, being married and raising my daughter. 2017 is going to be another great and AWESOME year.
