This past Saturday I took Sydney to get her learners permit. We tried to get it on Friday but traffic was so bad that I knew we wouldn’t get to the DMV in time. What’s crazy is we had to leave the house at 6:15 am in order to be at the DMV so we could be first in line. We were the first to arrive and sat in the lot for about 15 minutes when other people started showing up. I told Syd when four or more cars arrive we will go stand in line. About that time a Marta mobility bus pulled in to the parking lot and they dropped off at least four people that we could count. The people in the cars got out and instead of being the first in line we were damn near the 20th. WTH?!?!?!
Syd was a little nervous about the process but she toughed it out. The DMV lady asked Syd for proof that she was in school. Lo and behold it’s in the truck. Syd has to run to the truck and get it and when she gets back the lady then asks me for proof of residence. Guess who had to run to the truck this time? OK I walked but I walked fast. We finally complete all of the paperwork and now it’s time for the test. I sit somewhere and read a Readers Digest and roughly fifteen minutes later Syd has completed the test. She only missed one question. We bounce out and I am ready to start teaching. I hand her keys to Big Red and she looks at me like UN UN!! “Dad, I can’t drive that yet. It’s too big.” Reluctantly I take the keys back, kinda pouting actually, and we head home. Shoot I was ready to teach her how to handle the truck on the open roads.
On Sunday I FINALLY get to start teaching Syd. I am so excited to put her behind the wheel that I am up at 6 am like its Christmas. To be honest I was probably more excited than she was. I have to wait for everyone to wake up. C’mon, it’s time, er-one wake uppppppp!!!!! Finally Syd gets up and then Andrea gets up. We make a plan and then Andrea says, “We need to go by the studio. I need my microphone.” In my mind, I’m saying the lil kid words, “Awww” cause I’m ready TO GO!!!....NOW!!! It’s worse than being told you can go to Six Flags but everyone won’t be ready for two more hours. We finally get to the school where I want to begin lessons AND THE PARKING LOT IS FULL OF CARS!!! Apparently someone is using the school for Church now. Just last week it was empty. “MAN C’MON!!!” What I gotta do to teach Syd how to drive????? Aight bump it. I’ma make it do what it do in this parking lot. Andrea gets out the camera and starts recording the momentous occasion, the moment when I hand Syd the keys to the car!!!
I start by teaching her my very first rule. “Turn off your cell phone and put it in the center console. It doesn’t come out until you have arrived at your destination.” Next I show her how to set up the seats, how to adjust the pedals and finally the mirrors. Andrea is standing in the blind spots of the car and asks Syd if she can see her. Syd adjusts the mirrors and NOW we get to hit the road.
Syd pulls out and starts driving. She is a little intimidated and extremely tense. Her arms are outright at 9 and 3. We drive along the 35 mph zones, then the 45 mile, then the 55. She is learning how to control the car, taking direction from both Andrea and myself. We drive a couple of round trips totaling just under 50 miles and then she says she’s had enough. It was overwhelming and she was ready to stop for the day but she did it!!! I told her we will do this everyday so that she gains her confidence. It is so cool to be able to teach her this major step in life.
She drove in traffic. She drove on two lane roads, four lane roads. She did it!!!! I am so proud of her!!!! I can’t wait for Monday so she can get behind the wheel and practice some more.
