Basil Eleby has been indicted on felony arson and criminal damage to property the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office said. Two witnesses to the fire, Sophia Bruner and Barry Andrew Thomas, are being cited for criminal trespass. Eleby faces a maximum of 25 years in prison and a $50,000 fine in the March 30 fire if he is convicted. Bruner and Thomas will probably get probation and a small fine IF they are convicted.
According to everything I have read Bruner and Thomas both allege that Eleby, “Placed a chair on top of a shopping cart, reached under the shopping cart and ignited it.” Eleby told investigators that he and his friends talked about smoking crack cocaine under the highway overpass. He however decided not to smoke with them, and left before the fire started, the affidavit said.
Here is where I call B.S. on the “crime” and the “criminals”.
Anyone from the hood KNOWS crackheads don’t burn stuff willingly. They may set fire to something while smoking a rock but they don’t put a chair on a shopping cart and set it on fire. Any defense lawyer worth his/her weight in salt will get a trained substance abuse person to testify about what a crackheads behavior will be. Meth heads on the other hand, they will burn THEMSELVES to get high.
Three people are under a bridge to smoke a rock and this incident is what supposedly started the fire. The person from the DOT who authorized the storage of items under the bridge is not being charged at all? If I remember Georgia law correctly, anyone that is a participant in a felony be it willing or not, is automatically charged with the same felony so why is Eleby the only one charged with a crime?
Even the Fulton County Public Defender's Office Supervisor Elizabeth Markowitz is crying foul ball. She said, “Mr. Eleby is being used as a scapegoat.” She also said this is “a diversion to what we really should be investigating” saying that the Georgia Department of Transportation should be investigated as well.
I said it before but it’s worth repeating. I understand that someone has to be blamed for this colossal disaster but the blame is being placed on the wrong person.
So to sum up, Emmit Till was accused of whistling at a white woman and subsequently murdered for a crime he never committed. Oh wait, wrong story.
So to sum up, The Central Park Five were convicted of crimes based on coerced confessions and doctored evidence. Oh wait…I got it wrong again!!!
So to sum up, Marvin Anderson was convicted and spent 20 years in prison for a crime he never committed. Doggone it I got it wrong yet AGAIN!!!
In other words…..stop me if Basil Eleby and his accuser’s story sound familiar.
