Syd and I were at Wal-mart doing some shopping. We had completed the food shopping part and we were on our way to the auto department but I realized I forgot something from the food section that I didn’t have written on my list. We turned back and went up one aisle but there were a lot of people in that aisle so we went to another.
As we were walking the aisle a man in a wheelchair pulled into the aisle and BLOCKED the exit. I had a choice, a) turn around and go a different way, b) wait patiently for him to move, c) go ninja on him and cuss him out for deliberately blocking the aisle.
Syd and I sat there for what seemed like 20 minutes (really 2 max) and I was about to go ninja on him when he looked up and said, “Excuse me, could you help me. I want the chocolate pudding with no sugar but I can’t reach it. Now that changes the entire dynamic of the encounter.
I said to him, “How can we help?”
Guy: I can’t see the sugar free. Can you find it for me?
Syd: Dad, look here. They have some up top.
Guy: Do you see butterscotch?
Me: (scanning the shelves) I don’t see butterscotch sugar free.
Syd: Dad, look here, they have labels. They don’t have butterscotch on the labels.
Me: Ah here’s the chocolate.
Guy: Thanks can you put it between my legs (motioning with his eyes at the pedestal between his legs).
Me: No prob (as I carefully place them on the pedestal)
Guy: Thank you. Most people won’t help me. They turn in disgust and leave me alone. Some turn around as soon as they see me coming. They don’t want to be bothered. I really appreciate your help.
Syd: You’re welcome.
As we walk away Syd looks to me and said, “He’s nice. Why would people ignore him?” I try to explain why but the truth is I can’t explain the word callous in a way that would make Syd understand a heartless person. Instead I explain that there was a purpose for us to turn around at the moment we did to go back to the food aisle. There was a reason we were redirected away from the aisle I originally chose to walk and wound up on the aisle the man in the wheelchair was on, the same aisle that NO ONE but us and the guy were on.
I explained that God turned us around because at that moment one of his people needed our help and he knew we would do the right thing (even though I was about to go ninja on him).
If you think your path is of your choosing remember God puts you on the path he wants you on. You can try and choose your path without consulting Him but it always works best if you ask Him and let him put you on the correct path. Whenever we choose our own path we miss an opportunity he wanted us to have.
