This past weekend was an AMAZING weekend!!! Syd had her sweet 16 party. I told you before that I had this grandiose plan for her sweet 16 and she shot me down. She wanted a simple party with her closest friends and family. What is unusual is that this is the first time in a long time where I didn’t have much say in how things would happen. Andrea found the venue and coordinated EVERYTHING from the food and decorations down to getting Syds make up done. My responsibility….get the DJ and pizza, two things I know well. LOL
One of the things Andrea and her team wanted to set up was a party favor table. I suggested cake pops and Andrea thought that was a great idea. I told Andrea “I can make them” because I need something to do. Andrea gave me some YouTube tutorials to look at but I am a MAN. I don’t need no stinkin tutorials. I went on a hunt for a cake pop maker and set about making my own recipe…yeah recipe for DISASTER!!!! Those things came out like little rocks and tasted like straight up chalk. I told Andrea, “I should have listened” to which she responded, “C’mon dude. You are the MacGyver of the family. You have to figure out how to do it your way.”
For the last 20 plus years I have been the DJ performing for countless sweet 16 parties. Preparing for events is something I am used to doing but now I am on the other side of the fence and it was surreal. I literally walked into the venue and was asking everyone how I could help but the people Andrea hired KNEW what they were doing so all I could do was get ice for the drinks and sit down. Can you imagine how hard it is to do everything and then to suddenly have nothing to do?
When I walked in the event decorators, Cheek to Cheek Events, were already there working with the event room people on table set up and seat placement. I brought the stuff Andrea asked me to bring and they took it and began adding it to the décor. Andrea and her friend Nichole was sitting on the floor putting together a last minute party favor bag since my cake pops were brick pops. DJ D-Cas is in the building getting set up, the food tables are being set up. Our Nephew Jeremiah and Rodney from Cheek to Cheek are taking pre celebration pictures. JESUS I NEED SOMETHING TO DO but they have everything under control. See that look Erica gave me? "Sean I got this!!" I'm just kidding. LOL
Guests start arriving and then it hits me. My daughter is almost an adult and this is not a Chuck E Cheese event. This is a real life young adult party. My eyes started leaking a little, must have been the pollen…yeah that’s what it was. I am greeting people as they come in and Andrea is taking pictures and sometime around 8ish someone announces that Syd is here. Now typically when the sweet 16 young lady comes the parents would walk in with her for the grand entrance but there was a surprise that I already knew about. Her brother (my stepson) Taylor had come to town for her party. He had faked her out talking about the Air Force didn’t pay him enough to travel so she wasn’t aware he was going to be there.
So Taylor and Syd walk in and I am blown away. I almost didn’t recognize Sydney. She looked….like an ADULT!!!! I may have screamed or shouted something but I know I looked STUNNED. Sydney was absolutely BEAUTIFUL, like runway model beautiful. She and her Mom had picked out an incredible dress. Her hair was on fleek (is that still cool to say) and her makeup was flawless. I am a PROUD Daddy!!!
The party just takes off from there, food, dancing, tons of pictures…it’s a whirlwind. At one point I took a step back and stood outside the venue just to take it all in. Sydney is the happiest I have seen her in a long time. She has ALL of her family and friends that could come in the building. She is laughing and dancing. She is having so much FUN!!!! I think this is the best birthday party she has EVER had.
I have to tell you I COULD NOT have done this the way Andrea did it. She KNOWS Syd and she knew how to create what Syd had envisioned. Andrea along with her team turned a bare walls venue into a teen night club in less than 2 hours and to all of you I say THANK YOU!!! Thank you to Cheek to Cheek Events for the set up and decorations. Thank you for serving food EVEN though you weren’t obligated to do that. Thank you to our DJ D-Cas for doing a sweet 16 for me even though this is not something you normally do. Thank you to my ex-wife Deirdre and her Husband Sheddrick for the food. Thank you Nichole for being the fantastic Auntie and helping Andrea wherever she need it AND for dropping it like it’s hot and showing the youngsters that we can still TURN UP when need be. LOL
Thank you to our limo owner and driver Edwin Rankin for taking care of Mom. Thank you to my Mom and dear friends Reshard, D McQueen, their families and Gerald for being there for Sydney. She loved seeing ALL of you.
Thank you to Ben and his family in Florida (AKA BINGO) and my bonus Son Anthony (is that ok?) and his Fiancé Corinne in Virginia for their gifts. They couldn’t make the party but they sent their love.
Most importantly I want to thank my wife Andrea for making this happen. You are an AWESOME woman and great bonus mother to Syd (she calls Syd her bonus baby LOL).
Sydney WE love you like crazy. You have an amazing group of friends and an amazing family who will be there for you no matter what. Stay sweet and stay humble!!! I love you Baby Girl
I could go on but I will let the pictures talk for me.
