I’ve been going to the same barber for the last 20 plus years. Most of us know that once you get a GOOD barber, like a doctor, you NEVER switch. I’ve known Mitch since the mid 90’s when we stayed in the same apartment complex. I remember when he was going to school to get his license and now he has owned his shop, Executive Cuts and Styles, for a decade or more. To me that is a BOSS move.
Most Black Men take their boy children to the same barber, kind of like a rite of passage. Well there came a time when I had to “get” Syds hair done, where my skills of pulling her hair into afro puffs no longer was cool. She was getting older and it was time to upgrade her do from a don’t. LOL I went to Mitch’s shop and Miss Pearl was the first one to style her hair into a young ladies do, to get away from puffs or braids and beads. She was beautiful.
Eventually Syd went back to braids because it was easier on her to get up and go versus spending 30-45 minutes in the bathroom combing and pressing her hair. Fast forward to this year and Syd decided she wanted to do something called an undercut. I’ve never heard this term before so I had to look it up. I won’t bore you with what I learned as you probably already knew what it was anyway. She and Andrea were discussing possible barbers when I suggested Mitch. I guess the rite of passage transcends gender barriers.
