Father’s day weekend was a little different for me this year in that Syd is spending the entire summer with her mom versus one month. See I’m used to Syd being at the house for most of the summer and this year I had to do the “I’m the summer dad” pickup for the weekend. It was….weird.
Andrea and Syd both asked me what I wanted to do well in advance but as most dads know, we don’t need a special day to tell us we are great dads. Syd suggested we go to the Friday night drag races which is something we both enjoy doing. Andrea has never been so this was a first for her. Side note, Syd told her mom we were going to the Friday night drags and her mom said, “Why is your dad taking you to see homosexuals?” I damn near spit my drink out in laughter when Syd told me that. OK back to the CAR race portion of the story. LOL
The Friday night drag races are at the Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS) in Hampton. Gates open at 6:30 but the races don’t start until closer to 9. The races are for everyday people like you and I in normal cars from factory spec all the way to pro-street, pro-mod, dragster (there’s that word again) and funny car (NO HOMO). They race an 8th mile straight basically for bragging rights. It’s really cool.
Syd and I like to get as close to the cars as possible and luckily for us that’s within 20 feet of the start lane for the cars, yeah we are that close. We can smell the tire smoke and hear the burnouts. Most of the time the people are racing the car engines beyond airplane engine loud. If you don’t have hearing protection it can make you deaf over time.
There were all types of cars out racing this evening. We saw a Hellcat, a Demon, some Corvettes, lotsa Mustangs and Camaro’s just to name a few. Every time there was a race Syd and I would look at each other like two kids in a candy store. “I WANNA DO THAT!!” meaning race a car. As we were talking about it Andrea looked at us and said, “You want to race an actual car, as in down the track.” We both were giddy with excitement talking about heck yeah. Apparently I never told Andrea I wanted to buy a car JUST to race at the AMS. She looked at me and basically said, aw hell naw!! just not in those words. LOL
We stayed until 11:30 or so but it wasn’t over. The motorcycles hadn’t finished qualifying and the trucks were just finishing. Oh I didn’t tell you, there are pickup trucks including diesels racing. It probably didn’t end until 1 am or so but we were tired and so we bounced.
Andrea and Syd know not to get me a tie or flowers for “MY” day but they def know what TO get me and that’s family time so Saturday and Sunday was basically chill at the house and watch movie day. I cooked up some fresh cut French fries and Hotdogs on Saturday and Andrea hooked us up with a spaghetti dinner on Sunday. My Mon, Jason and Brittany came by and we just chilled. That’s all I need is my family for Father’s day. AND A FAST CAR TO RACE AT AMS
Thank you Andrea and Syd for an AWESOME WEEKEND!!! I loved every minute of it.
