Like I told you all last month the holidays have taken on a different meaning for me. Christmas is tomorrow and instead of a chrumuh tree with a ton of gifts under it we will be celebrating low key and just chilling out.
The reason being is partly because the “kids” are no longer kids. One is a young lady and one is a full grown man. They have their own lives and friends. Yes they want to hang with us and pop gifts BUT realistically, what can we get two grown people that will make them light up like when they were children? Imagine Anthony opening a gift and seeing a tickle me Elmo or Syd opening a gift with black Barbie inside? Both will look at us like, “Have you lost your minds?” On second thought....maybe we should do that!!!! LOL.
The other reason is because Christmas is just too commercial. It’s been turned into spending your money on gifts to “surprise” the other person. Our philosophy has been why wait until chrumuh to do this so instead we do our chrumuh all year long for everyone and that works out better…….and cheaper. Having said all of that I do want to tell you a classic story from Chrumuh past and leave you with two of my favorite Chrumuh songs. If you are wondering why I spell Christmas “Chrumuh” listen to the song by the 69 Boyz in the video below.
Back in the day, I forget what year, Syd and I were in the car and Silent Night by The Temptations came on. Now being honest, I think that is the BEST version of Silent Night I have EVER heard. I crank the volume up and Syd and I are singing along with the song. I know everyone of ya’ll do the same thing I do and that’s try to hit those high notes Eddie Kendrick’s sings…..AND NOT ONE OF US CAN. I’m about to give myself an aneurysm belting out “Sleeeeeep in HEAVENLY PEACEEEEEEEEE” and Syd is looking at me like I am crazy, “Dad, why are you turning red?” “Shush, song ain’t over.” Er-one Black knows you can’t talk until Melvin Franklin says, “Merry Christmas from The Temptations”. Teach yo kids….IMJS
The song ends, I turn the volume back down and say, “That is my FAVORITE chrumuh song.” Syd says, “I love that song too. That lady can really sing.”
“GIRL!!!! That ain’t no woman singing. That’s a dude.” “A guy sings like that?” “Yes baby. This is when people could sing.” She then says, “No autotune?” “No baby, Autotune didn’t exist back in our time.”
I’mosayit onemogin….TEACH YO KIDS!!!!!
The last thing I want you to do is listen to this song by the 69 Boyz. It is my second favorite chrumuh song. Don’t worry it’s clean AND if you are not up on down south slang you will have to read the lyrics and look at the pictures in the video to understand.
